Registration Closed for Jon Luopa Day Celebration

Sunday, June 16, 10 a.m. service of celebration on UUC livestream

We have reached capacity for Jon Luopa Day on June 16, 2024, and are no longer able to accept new registrations. The celebratory Sunday Service will be available to watch via UUC Live Stream from 10:00-11:30 a.m. (Pacific Time), and will be recorded for later viewing.

While we are very pleased to see so much interest in gathering together at UUC to honor the Rev. Jon Luopa, Senior Minister, and celebrate him on his last Sunday in the pulpit, we are very sorry that we are not able to accommodate all who wish to attend in person as Jon prepares to retire from 25 years of extraordinary service to University Unitarian Church and 43 years in UU parish ministry.

Participants in the service will be directed to assigned seating in the Chapel. The Choir Loft will be reserved for performing musicians only. Others will be welcomed into the Chapel on a first come, first seated basis until we reach capacity. Overflow seating will be offered in the meeting rooms on the lower floor, where the service will be provided live on-screen. We do not expect Nathan Johnson Hall to be available for overflow seating, as the caterers and band will be setting up during the service.

Children registered with their families are welcome in the chapel, or the family may opt for the viewing room in the Children's Suite, which will have "fidgets" and art supplies available. We will also offer childcare for Sprouts (age 6 months to about 4 years) and activities for older children in the Children's Suite or on the East Patio and grounds.

During the program in the Chapel, there will be tears, joy, Jon’s favorite hymns and an anthem composed in his honor. There will be tributes, gifts, and a special collection to establish a new church program in Jon’s name. Jon will deliver his final sermon and benediction as our Senior Minister. The service will end with a ritual of releasing Jon to his family after so many years of his sacrificial ministry to others.

A reception and informal buffet lunch with live bluegrass music will immediately follow at UUC, throughout the building. This "after party" will include outdoor games for all, with some quiet spaces indoors for young children and those of all ages who need a little less hubbub.

Parking will be very limited at UUC on June 16. If you are able to take public transportation or use a drop-off service, please do so. If you plan to drive but are able to walk a few blocks, we encourage you to find parking on nearby surface streets so that those who have limited mobility or young children can take advantage of parking in the lot.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and consideration as we honor the Rev. Jon Luopa.
