UNIVERSITY UNITARIAN CHURCH

High School

(9th-12th Grade)

Our Whole Lives (8th-9th Grade): TBD

Our Whole Lives (OWL) is a comprehensive sexuality education program designed to help participants gain the knowledge, values and skills to lead sexually healthy, responsible lives. In this OWL class, youth explore many topics such as anatomy and physiology, gender, sexual orientation, relationships, dating, pregnancy, contraception, and sexual decision making. Please note: Our Whole Lives requires advanced registration and is not available for drop-in participation after October 15.

Coming of Age (9th-10th Grade):

Sunday mornings, 11:15 am - 12:45 pm

Coming Of Age is a rite of passage experience where participants explore their personal and spiritual beliefs.  At the beginning of the year, Coming of Age teens are paired with an adult mentor from the congregation, who offers a sense of guidance and perspective. Together, mentors and mentees explore questions about god, identity, life after death, good and evil, justice-making, and personal purpose. The class works together on a service project and creates a worship service. Coming of Age culminates in a solo vigil and the development of a faith statement, which teens share with the congregation during a special service in May. Please note, Coming of Age requires advanced registration and is not available for drop-in participation after October 15.

Youth Group (9th-12th Grade):

Community is vital to our youth and UUC is committed to providing them with opportunities to build strong connections by meeting them where they are at. Although Youth Group does not have a set schedule yet, we invite youth and families to sign up for the Youth Programs Newsletter to learn about upcoming events and activities for high school youth including:

  • Youth Group seeks to create a safe space where teens can explore their values and beliefs. Youth group emphasizes fun, connection, creative projects, social action, and leadership. Each session includes opportunities for discussion, self-expression, faith development and spiritual practices.
  • Special events include things like movie nights, gingerbread making, or an open mic/karaoke night. Youth also plan one worship service each year.
  • Service and social action opportunities at UUC and in the community like participating in the MLK Day or PRIDE month events, helping with childcare at church, or serving on or meeting with a church committee.
  • Regional meet ups with other PNW UU Youth. UU congregations in the Puget Sound and the Pacific Northwest are actively working together to plan youth get togethers, youth cluster overnights and Youth Cons (conferences) to foster UU youth connections throughout the region.
  • UU summer camps offer the opportunity to be both a camper and a camp counselor. As campers for a week at Camp Blue Boat near Ellensburg, WA or for a weekend at The Eliot Institute at Seabeck, high school youth have the opportunity to connect with other UU youth from around the Pacific Northwest for fun, adventure, friendship, identity formation, leadership development, faith formation and the opportunity to try out different spiritual practices each summer. As camp counselors at UUC’s Chalice Camp for K - 5 graders, high schoolers can also experience a sense of the greater UU community, gain leadership skills, and the opportunity to earn a stipend or service hours.
