Our congregation is grateful for UUC's Administrative and Program staff, who professionally manage Family Ministry, Music, Adult Learning & Connections, and Operations & Facilities. They work collaboratively with our Ministers and scores of volunteers.

Program and Administrative Leadership

Cynthia Setel, Interim Executive for Finance and Operations

Cynthia Setel joined UUC staff as Interim Executive for Finance and Operations on February 5, 2025, following the retirement of Byron Krystad, who was UUC's Director of Operations for 15 years. Cynthia's position is full-time through the next 9-12 months.

Cynthia comes to us with more than 20 years of expertise in nonprofit and public agency management and consulting. She has specialized in CEO, CFO and COO interim leadership roles to help guide organizations through complex transitions.  (Read more about Cynthia's background here.)

During her time with us, we’ve asked Cynthia to focus on the following five priorities: (1) direction and oversight of finances and budget, (2) management of facilities, technology and information systems, (3) support of fund development activities, (4) management of contracts, policies, and human resources, and (5) development of an interim staffing plan, working closely with the Interim Senior Minister and Acting Administrator.

Office hours:  Cynthia is generally at UUC Mondays through Fridays and by appointment. Email is the best way to reach her.

Janine Larsen, Acting Administrator

As of December 16, 2024, Janine was appointed Acting Administrator for UUC. This is a full-time, transitional position that is designed to help us bridge some gaps as we determine and implement next steps in re-imagining and re-building our staff team. She will help us maintain continuity in congregational services, program leadership, communications, and support to the Interim Minister and Interim Executive for Finance and Operations in their transitional work.

Janine  joined  UUC staff as Director of Minsitries in 2016. In that role, she oversaw church programs and staff supporting learning, spiritual deepening, connection & communications, congregational services, and leadership development. The position became half-time in July 2024, in response to budget decisions and the need to begin restructuring staff responsibilities as the church entered a time of ministerial transition.

Earlier in Janine's professional career, she served the Unitarian Universalist Association in the Pacific Northwest for twelve years, as District Executive and on Regional Staff. She worked in nonprofit management and consulting for 25 years before that. Janine is a UU lay leader whose first UU church was in Woodinville, WA, where she served in a variety of leadership roles including Board President. She joined UUC as a member in 2019.

Janine has practiced Zen Buddhism since 2001, and was ordained at UUC as a Soto Zen priest in 2019 by James Myoun Ford, Roshi (who is also UU Minister). Now an authorized Zen Teacher, Janine leads UUC's Zen Meditation and Study group. Janine and her spouse are both Seattle natives and have a daughter in Portland and a son and daughter-in-law in Duvall.

Office hours: Janine is generally at UUC on Sundays and Tuesdays through Fridays, with Mondays and Saturdays off. Office hours are by  appointment. Email is the best way to reach her.

Aria Curtis, Director of Family Ministry

Aria found her passion for faith development and family ministry at the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship as an Our Whole Lives facilitator and as a preschool teacher for the Bellingham Cooperative School. Aria received her BA in German Studies from Western Washington University and, before coming to UUC, she served as the Director of Children and Family Ministry at the UU Church of Spokane. Aria completed credentialling at the Advanced Level through the Unitarian Universalist Association in Spring of 2020. She enjoys baking, contra dancing, square dancing, and embroidery.

Office Hours:  Aria's regular office hours are Monday through Thursday. She is available by appointment for in-person, Zoom, or phone meetings.

Shameka Davis, Childcare Provider

Hello, my name is Shameka! I’m originally from Chicago and just relocated to Seattle about 3 years ago. I’ve been working in early childhood education for the past 8 years and absolutely love spending time and getting to know young children. I have a strong passion for education and advocacy for those who dedicate their lives to educating. I currently serve as a preschool director for a Montessori school just north of UUC.

When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my infant daughter and my partner Terra. I also try to travel as much as possible and take advantage of some of Washington state’s hiking trails during the summers.

Jasmin Capestany, Childcare Provider

Jasmin Capestany grew up at UUC and has been working in Sprouts since high school! As a teen, she was involved in regional youth leadership and active at youth cons. Jasmin is passionate about ensuring that Sprouts is a place kids feel welcome in and cared for. She is interested in early childhood education and in her free time enjoys working on her art.

Jacob Finkle, Intergenerational Choir Director

Operations and Facilities Staff

Jessica Monahan, Office Manager

Jessica Monahan is currently on leave. Please contact Janine Larsen, Acting Administrator, if you need assistance with church matters.

Chris Budd, Accountant

Chris began working at UUC in June of 2012. She was originally contracted to work on the audit and continued on to perform the accountant’s duties once the audit was complete. She became a member of the staff in July 2013. Chris is a native of Virginia where she received her BS in Accounting from Virginia Tech. She has lived mostly in Seattle since 1990.  She currently lives in Wedgwood with her two daughters, Danielle and Michelle.  She enjoys spending time at the gym, soccer, reading, gardening and cooking.

Office hours: Monday through Thursday

Susan St. John, Communications Coordinator

Susan is a Seattle native and has been a member of UUC for over 30 years. With an MS in Computer Science, she worked as a software engineer for 16 years and then decided it was time for a change. Susan returned to school and finished her MLIS (Masters in Library and Information Science) a few months before her first daughter, Lyra was born. Parenting took precedence, so it wasn’t until 7 years later, and after a second child, Katt (previously known as Cadia), was in kindergarten, that she began putting her passion for organizing and communicating information to use for UUC. Since the fall of 2012, Susan has been putting together our newsletter, maintaining our website and Facebook page and creating the Order of Service and worship slides  each week. Before becoming a (part-time) employee, she chaired the UUC Board in 1997, co-chaired the Welcoming Congregation Task Force, sang in the Loft Choir for a while, and facilitated a Deep Ecology curriculum for the UUC Young Adults (back when she was one, eons ago!)

Jax Wokas, Audio-Visual Technician

Hello! My name is Jax Wokas, I use he/him and they/them pronouns (you can choose which) and I’m excited to be the AV Technician at University Unitarian Church. I’m currently a sophomore at UW, but back home in Illinois I participated in my high school’s tech crew. There, I specialized in sound design/sound board operation and scenic art and participated in over 20 shows. My high school also had large-scale events and assemblies where we would use cameras to stream it, so I helped with wiring that as well. Currently, being a student is taking up most of my time, but in my free time I enjoy drawing and listening to music. I was raised in a conservative, Lutheran church in my hometown, so it was exciting to me to see a church like UUC that’s so open and accepting. I was looking for jobs where I could continue using my technical theater skills because I’ve missed it a lot during quarantine and I’m excited to be able to do something I love at an accepting place like UUC.

Miguel Del Valle, Weekday Custodian

Miguel Del Valle joined our UUC Custodial Team as Weekday Custodianin January, 2025. He is looking forward to getting to know our congregation, friends and visitors. Miguel is the son of our long-time custodian, Jorge del Valle. Jorge referred Miguel to us and gave him a good review about UUC. Miguel had been looking for a full-time position after working as a sales associate and sometimes manager at a big box store, and as a fiber optic cable installer. His interests include automotive design, fitness and martial arts, working as a leader and part of a team, and enjoying time with family and friends. He hopes to take online classes to gain skills towards a degree and career in technology.

Miguel works Sunday through Thursday from 2-10 p.m.

Jorge Del Valle, Weekend Custodian

Jorge is our longest tenured custodian, having been with University Unitarian Church for more than ten years. He is originally from Mexico City.  He lives in the Seattle area with his wife and their son, Miguel. When Jorge isn’t working at UUC or his full-time job, he loves to watch soccer and play soccer as well as going to see movies.

Jorge cares for UUC facilities on Friday and Saturday afternoons and evenings.

Floyd Williams, Weekend Custodian

Floyd joined our Facilities Staff in September of 2021 but is not a new face around UUC. He and his wife, Sue, have been members for decades. As of January 15, Floyd moved from full-time weeday custodian to half-time weekend custodian.

Prior to joining UUC staff, Floyd had a long career in education and training, process management and supervision. During a break in grad school, he worked as a janitor and supervisor. After deciding university teaching was not for him, Floyd switched to banking and then, aerospace. In 2017, he retired from all that and began substituting as a custodian for Shoreline schools. When the custodial position opened here, he was happy to move to UUC to serve this community.

Floyd works 8-2 Friday and Saturday and 7:30-2 on Sundays.
