Dialogue Group: American Myths

Thursday, January 9, 7:00–8:45 p.m. in Knatvold

Join the 4th Principle Dialogue Group as we discuss the article “To Understand Trump vs. Harris, You Must Know These American Myths” by Richard Slotkin, an historian of American culture and its mythology of violence. Thanks go to congregant Don Hood for sharing with us a paywall-free link to the New York Times article. Slotkin’s article covers five myths: the myths of the nation’s founding, of the frontier, of liberation, of the Lost Cause, and of the good war. What did these myths mean during the presidential campaign, and what do they mean to our liberal church community? Come lend your voice to the discussion and let us learn from your perspective. Opinions vary, and that’s why we’re curious to hear what each person has to say.

Next topic: On January 23, we will discuss Martin Luther King and especially his “Other America” speech. This speech is worth a listen even if you don’t attend our discussion.

The 4th Principle Dialogue Group promotes the “free & responsible search for truth & meaning,” pursuing the congregational goal of Connected Community. We get to know each other and connect to each other through meaningful, open-hearted dialogue. Drop-ins welcome. Homework not required. See more in UU Connect.
