UUC, TC3 & More: Gratitude as We Partner to Care for Each Other

With temperatures forecasted to be in the 80's for several days in mid-May, the King County Regional Homelessness Authority set up cooling centers throughout the region. Libraries and community centers typically extend hours to open as cooling centers. As the Northeast Seattle Public Library is not air conditioned, it was particularly helpful for UUC to open up a cooling center space for our Tent City 3 (TC3) neighbors. Volunteers staffed space inside so that any from the TC3 community could seek respite and get out of the heat. All from TC3 who sought space to relax, read or rest inside expressed gratitude. Unfortunately, two from TC3 nonetheless experienced heat-related medical emergencies, and medics were called to offer support. A big thank you to the Regional Homelessness Authority for attending to this important climate justice and health challenge and to those at UUC who stepped up to respond.

TC3 has someone assigned to provide security for the camp, and the nearby neighborhood, 24/7 around the clock. On Thursday, May 11 at 3:30 a.m. the person who was on TC3 security detail heard a series of loud noises coming from the south of UUC. Investigating the noise, they saw a person using a loud tool trying to break into the Wedgwood Mart at 35th Avenue NE and NE 65th Street. The TC3 security person yelled out, interrupting the would-be burglar and causing him to flee and then called 911. The TC3 security person provided information to Seattle Police Department, including a description of both the would-be thief and his car. Wedgewood owes a big thank you to TC3 for their efforts to improve safety in our neighborhood.

King County Public Health recently offered a vaccine clinic at Tent City 3, providing Hep A, Hep B and COVID boosters onsite. We appreciate KCPH's on-going effort to protect all of us, and especially the most vulnerable among us.
