The UUC Zen Meditation and Study Group will be engaging in a week-long observance of Rohatsu December 1-8, leading up to the Buddha’s Enlightenment Day celebrated on the final day. Extra periods of meditative practice have been added to their weekly schedule at UUC and online to provide group support of their intentions. These are drop-in sessions open to all. Find these opportunities by browsing the UUC Calendar during the week.
The Zen tradition of intensifying spiritual practice for Rohatsu is inspired by the story of Buddha’s own determination to meditate under a Bo Tree until he attained enlightenment—that is, woke up to the realities of life, death and relief from suffering. According to lore, he sat still for 49 days and awoke when he saw the rising star. He reached down and touched the earth, and the ground trembled. He responded, “The earth and I and all beings awaken together at the same time.” He arose and began to teach the wisdom of the middle way.
Some of the UUC Rohatsu periods are entirely silent; others include teachings, shared study, and discussion. There is no charge for participating, though a donation box will be available. Contributions will go to UUC’s Operating Fund in appreciation of the ongoing program.
