Welcome back to the 4th Principle Dialogue Group! Whether you’re a stalwart of the Dialogue Group or a newcomer, you’re welcome to our first get-together of the new church year. We’ll catch up with each other, talk about our past topics, and discuss possible future topics.
Previous topics have been: the book High Conflict, by Amanda Ripley; UUA Board of Trustee nominees & challengers; Rev. Thandeka’s 1999 lecture “Why Anti-Racism Will Fail”; the book Woke Racism, by John McWhorter; Rev Jon’s sermons (twice); critical theory; Martin Luther King, Jr.; the proposed revision to UU principles & purposes; accountability & responsibility; and liberalism. If you’re curious, you can find notes and links about these past topics on the group’s online doc.
We try to select topics that relate personally to us, both as individuals and as members of the congregation. This year, our potential topics include Martin Luther King’s last book (published by UUs), Where Do We Go from Here?; last June’s General Assembly, including the vote on UU principles; artificial intelligence; UUC’s mission and member obligations, per our bylaws; the natural world and maybe nature mysticism; The American Creed, by Forrest Church, a famous UU author; postmodernism and objectivity; the book The Lost History of Liberalism, by Helen Rosenblatt (Unitarians mentioned repeatedly, particularly Channing & Parker); and more of Jon’s sermons. What would you like to discuss with your fellow congregants? Come talk to us!
The 4th Principle Dialogue Group promotes the “free & responsible search for truth & meaning,” pursuing the congregational goal of Connected Community. We get to know each other and connect to each other through meaningful, open-hearted dialogue. Drop-ins welcome. Homework not required. See more about our group in UUC Connect.
