UNIVERSITY UNITARIAN CHURCH

Thinking, Understanding, Believing: A SEMINAR WITH JON LUOPA

"Thinking, Understanding, Believing" is a series of three intimate seminars with the Rev. Jon Luopa, each with three sessions, to be presented in the fall, winter, and spring of 2023/24.

A small group of participants will be introduced to the teachings of three prominent UU theologians and invited to deeply examine:

  • What liberal religious traditions inform our search for stability and change?
  • How reliable is our experience?
  • Is there anything we can trust, ultimately?

If these and similar questions are of interest to you, please review the additional information before you apply.

The seminar series will be limited to fifteen people and will be selected from UUC members and friends who apply and are able to commit to attending all class sessions.

before applying

Each seminar block will consist of three Wednesday evening sessions.

All sessions will be held in person at University Unitarian Church, in the Knatvold Room, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Participants must commit to attend all sessions and come prepared for discussion by reading the texts as assigned. You are encouraged to make notes while you are reading, and take notes while you are in class. This will help you get the most out of the course and participate more meaningfully during the seminar.

The first of the three seminars will take place on October 18 and 25, and November 1. The required text is Faith Without Certainty: Liberal Theology in the 21st Century, by Paul Rasor.

The second block will take place on January 24 and 31, and February 7. The required text is Blessing the World: What Can Save Us Now, by Rebeccca Parker.

The final seminar block will take place on April 24 and May 1 and 8. The required text is Transforming Liberalism: The Theology of James Luther Adams, by George K. Beech.

All books will be available for purchase from the UUC bookstore. Cost of these books will not be a barrier to participation - please request purchase support on the application form.

15 applicants will be chosen for enrollment.

Rev. Luopa is looking for participants who are committed to study and active participation in this small group, interactive format. Additional considerations in selecting participants include the desire to provide a variety of perspectives and a range of scholarship. You do not need to be familiar with the material, but experience with Unitarian Universalism will be helpful.

Interested participants may be invited to co-lead discussions with a broader group following conclusion of the classes. This will not be required as a condition of enrollment, but ideally participants will be willing to support other UUC members and friends who wish to learn more about the topics presented.

Invitations will be extended by October 11.

An online audit option or access to video recordings of the sessions may be available.

We recognize that the choice of dates, in-person only attendance, required study, and capped enrollment will prevent some from applying. To expand the reach of this seminar, we hope to provide live auditing through online viewing, or through recordings available at your convenience. Additionally, we may offer small group discussion opportunities for those who are not able to enroll but are interested in following the presentation and sharing conversation with others.

There is no charge for this course.

Participants will have access to financial support for purchase of the required books. Childcare may be available on site if requested at time of application.
