Our Second Sunday Plate on May 14 will benefit Wa Na Wari. This organization creates space for Black ownership, possibility, and belonging through art, historic preservation and connection. The donated funds are earmarked for their Artist-in-Residence Program and Art Gallery, which offer support and recognition to emerging artists of color.
Sited in a fifth-generation, Black-owned home in Seattle’s Central District, Wa Na Wari is an active model for how Black art and culture can combat gentrification and displacement. The program was created by members of Seattle’s Black community and focuses on serving the historically diverse members of Seattle’s Central Area, although its programs are open to all. It is a safe place for organizing and movement building, empowering members of the community to work for Black ownership of property. Wa Na Wari offers a shared sense of belonging through programs including free community meals, an oral history project, a food garden project for youth, film screenings, lectures, performances, and celebrations.
UUC's Art Committee has been developing a partnership with Wa Na Wari. Many at UUC enjoyed an exhibit of collage art by Adetola Abatan in UUC's chapel last February (2022) and took home pieces of her work.
We encourage members of UUC to give generously on May 14 to support Wa Na Wari. We invite you to visit their bi-monthly artist receptions, purchase art created by affiliated artists, and also to attend events such as concerts, comedy nights, and other special events.
