Dialogue Group: Martin Luther King

Thursday, January 25, 7:00–8:45 p.m. in the King Room (naturally)

Join the 4th Principle Dialogue Group as we listen deeply to each other and discuss Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We’ll look at these three works of King’s (no homework required, but first video is especially recommended).

The Other America, speech (video), 1967. Be sure to watch this one.

Don’t Sleep Through the Revolution, Ware Lecture, given to Unitarian Universalists at General Assembly, 1966 (transcript). What did King call on us to do?

Letter from Birmingham Jail, essay, 1963

In addition, here’s a timeline of MLK and UUs, compiled by Jonathan Tweet.

We can compare what King said to what we’ve heard or read before from other African American voices, such as Rev. Thandeka, Crystal Fleming, John McWhorter, and Ibram X Kendi.

Upcoming Scheduled Topics

February 8: Jon’s recent sermons: “Being Broken Together”, “What Makes You Special?” (highly recommended), “Saving Ourselves?”, “A Child Shall Lead Them”, and “The Challenge of Control”. Also, consider listening to two touchstone sermons about our congregation’s identity: “What Holds Us Together?” (10 Sep 2023) and “A Home for Mindful Seekers” (11 Sep 2022, starts at 33:15)

February 22: Meet with Catherine Ruha, Dass, and Alex from UUC's Climate Action Team

March 14 & 28: The Lost Histories of Liberalism by Helena Rosenblatt. It’s in the church bookstore, and it’s worth a read even if you don’t attend our dialogue. Nineteenth-century Unitarianism is part of the story.

The 4th Principle Dialogue Group promotes the “free and responsible search for truth and meaning,” pursuing the congregational goal of Connected Community. We get to know each other and connect to each other through meaningful, open-hearted dialogue. Drop-ins welcome. Homework not required. See more in UU Connect.
