Last Sunday’s grand opening of the Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Exhibit in the UUC chapel was a smash hit! Master Artist Hongduan Yang and his students welcomed visitors with warm smiles and good humor as they demonstrated traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting. Visitors from both the UUC family and the artists’ circles crowded about, asking questions and generally delighting in the exchange of creativity and culture.
Visitors young and old were thrilled to watch their name painted in both English and Chinese on bookmarks. Several artists demonstrated full paintings, and these practice works were later given away to those in attendance. Young UUC member Sophie Bianamara won a beautiful painting of red flowers and butterflies. In addition, copies of Selected Works of Chinese Painting by Master Yang and his students were raffled to lucky winners. The artists also served homemade Chinese treats, including bean paste–filled mochi designed as charming orange pumpkins.
The UUC Art Committee thanks all who participated and the artists from the United States Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Association. This special exhibit will be on display in the chapel through December 6.
