An exhibit of paintings by Juliet Shen opens December 8 in the chapel. In her often colorful and detailed images of forest floors, trees, water and wind, Juliet explores the constant transformations that take place in nature. “I think our spiritual and creative life is in similar flux,” she explains, “and that observing the natural way of things can give us moral guidance for living as well as comfort in aging.” There will not be a reception with the artist.
Juliet draws on techniques of drawing, ink, relief printing, and painting. She identifies two major influences in her approach. Designing typefaces (such as for the local, indigenous Lushootseed language) has heightened her facility in seeing edges and the spaces between objects. Secondly, she credits her familiarity with Chinese brush painting for teaching her that great beauty can be created from humble tools.
