October Social Justice Partner: SHARE/WHEEL (Tent City 3)

Please join others from UUC in celebrating and supporting SHARE/WHEEL, our partner for the Dedicated Social Justice plate collection (a.k.a. the second Sunday plate) this month. You may still contribute to this effort via our giving form. (Select “Special plate” in the “Fund” box and put "Oct 8 dedicated plate" in the memo line.)

SHARE/WHEEL is an organization we know well through our close friendship and partnership with Tent City 3, which set up camp in our parking lot this past spring. In addition to Tent City 3, SHARE/WHEEL sponsors Tent City 4 and a number of shelters, all of which carry a unique and highly effective model of self-management. Through their work, SHARE/WHEEL has enabled participants to experience safety, self-empowerment and a sense of hope, community and family at a most critical time in their lives.

During our October 8 service, SHARE/WHEEL participants spoke passionately about the meaning of Tent City 3 and SHARE/WHEEL. Anitra Freeman was able to secure housing after participating in SHARE/WHEEL’s programs, and since then she has served as a long-time volunteer and advocate. Anitra highlighted that SHARE/WHEEL is comprised of “homeless and formerly homeless individuals who are working together for survival and justice. It will take justice to end homelessness. But in the meantime, we need to survive.”
