Watch for a new art exhibit in the chapel gallery on July 2, 2023, featuring the work of two artists,
Sun Mu Cho and
Tom Greggs. Cho’s watercolors of flowers, animals, and landscapes are meant to appeal to people’s emotions. Greggs’ work, a combination of portraits and places that seem to be familiar, draw on the power of recognition and remembrance. All are invited to meet the artists at a reception on Sunday, July 9, from 11:15 a.m.–1 p.m. The exhibit will hang until July 29. Most works are for sale; part of the proceeds benefit UUC. Both artists have ties to UUC.
Sun Mu Cho, the mother of UUC member Alice Cho Snyder, was born in South Korea. She immigrated to the United States with her husband in the early seventies. She has also lived in West Africa for four years, and traveled in Asia, Africa, and Europe, before settling in Seattle over 35 years ago.
Cho started painting at age 4, took various art classes, and enjoyed exploring. She was inspired to paint with watercolors because of the luminous and transparent quality created out of only water and pigment. She found it challenging to learn to layer and create the full spectrum of value and color, yet exciting to discover what is possible and to enjoy the unpredictable and sometimes surprising results.
Cho recognizes that people can have very different reactions to her paintings. She understands that Art is meant to appeal to people’s emotions. As an artist, she feels various emotions while she is creating each piece. She hopes that her paintings bring peace and beauty to the viewers.
Tom Greggs, UUC member and husband of Elaine Greggs, first became aware of art in elementary school when he saw advertising images of pipe-smoking artists in Popular Mechanics magazine. From high school art classes, he headed off to the Art Department at Central Washington State College. He used his creativity and interest in space to design and build homes, eventually specializing in home design. While his family was growing, he used photography to continue his self-development. He realizes that photography has been the key to understanding and employing compositional elements in his work.
Greggs says, “I love pastel. I don’t use a traditional layering technique but rather the opposite: applying, then erasing, then applying and erasing again until I reach the tone and texture that I’m after.” He also enjoys working in gouache, watercolor, and especially graphite in portraits and figure drawing. In recent years, he has used Zoom to improve his drawing and painting skills and connect with the art community. As far as subject matter goes, Greggs explains, “I like a hint of the human in my work. So, urban scenes and human faces draw me in, pun intended.”
We hope that you will enjoy the work of these two artists with connections to our UUC community. For more information, or to purchase a piece of artwork, look for a member of the Art Committee wearing a red button after services, or contact Judy Oerkvitz or Rhona Jack, Co-Chairs.
